We usually associate privately-produced solutions with quality and polish, such as the whole Apple philosophy. "Don't try to do it yourself, let us decide what's best for you!" Lock-in is indeed a profitable angle for private web companies (ex. the App Store, Amazon's online bookstore). It's interesting that open-source is actually the better solution for CMS and the web in general. Maybe it has something to do with the way the web has grown; the general willingness to share knowledge goes right along with the open source philosophy. While it's nice for personal art experiments, nothing is more frustrating blindly clicking on random objects hoping it will take you to some information. I generally like to put the meat of the matter up front on the page. Ultimately, it all goes back to what we learned from Wucious Wong about Design, and that is DESIGN EMPHASIZES PRODUCT. Every element of a design emphasizes or supports the main theme or idea. If it doesn't do that, then the design has failed.
